Carbon removal, bamboo & positive impact
Nature-based carbon removal is removing and storing excess co, from the atmosohere or oceans, Nature-based removamethods use the power of nature in combination with human ingenuity. Storing carbon through for example bamboo plants inthe solils, but also in buildings where for example engineered bamboo wood, bamboo insulation or bamboo furiniture isapplied.
We all have a responsiblity to avoid offseting being used as greenwashing. Airines, oil companies and others that claim to beineutral’ while only offsetting their emissions are not contributing enough to actually reverse climate change. ONCRA believes insupporting removers by buying and reporting on CO, certificates after everything has been done to reduce emissions, and buyingactual CO, certificates for removal, as prescribed by the Oxford Offsetting Principles.
Among other things because of its rapid growth and longevity, bamboo is a very efficient crop for removing CO, from theatmosphere, As a result, it stores a lot of carbon in the plant itself and in the sol. When bamboo is processed into sustainablematerials with a long lifespan, carbon is locked up for a long time. Emissions are also avoided by using bamboo as an alternative tofossil materials. Thus, a huge carbon sink can be created with the bamboo fields of the various bamboo farms. in addition, bamboooffers further benefits for sol, biodiversity and sustainable economic development. The amount of CO, stored can reach 1,662tonnes of CO, per m* of bamboo, looking at the densest materials. A bamboo forest, depending on the carbon already present in thesoil, can store hundreds of tonnes of CO, in the soil.
One bamboo plant consists of several culms. Every year, new shoots grow from the mother plant. Typically, 20-25% of the culms in asustainable bamboo forest or plantation can be harvested every year. Unlike trees, the bamboo plant does not die after harvesting, preventing deforestation. Harvesting the mature plants actually increases the yield and quaity of the plantation. A sustainablymanaged bamboo forest or plantation also has a high capacity to absorb CO2. On the bamboo farms, no pesticides are applied, noploughing and no clear-cuting is carried out. Bamboo is green allvear round and improves the soi. Growing bamboo is water-.efficient. A mature bamboo forest retains huge amounts of water in the soi. in short, a perfect foundation for a vibrant ecosystemwith lots of insects, birds, small land animals, funghi and plants.
Basically, ‘credits’ or ‘certificates’ are the same thing. They both represent 1 tonne of CO2 removed. However, the EU CarbonRemoval Certification Framework (CRCF) among other things aims to combat greenwashing by allowing companies to demonstratetheir action in this area. On this basis, by using the word ‘certificates’, Europe is trying to make the diference clear from ‘credits, which sometimes have a neqative connotation.
ONCRA certificates follow the Oxford Offsetting principles. These are four key rules to define proper offseting. 1) buyers must reducetheir emissions as much as possible 2) CO, certificates must actualy remove carbon (i.e. use removal credits) and 3) store them for along time & 4) your actions must support the development of net zero aligned offseting practices. The EU Carbon RemovalCertification Framework (CRCF) aims to scale up carbon removal activities and combat greenwashing by enabling companies todemonstrate their action in this area.
Buying certificates & ONCRA
1. After choosing a removal project from which you want to purchase CRc, add the desired number of CRC to your cart and completethe purchase process.
2. You will recelve contimation of your purchase, f vou are a company or oraanisaion and would like an invoice of vour purchaseplease send an e-mail to admin@bamboologic.eu with the proof of purchase of your CRc purchase and your detalls for invoicegeneration.
3. After your purchase, ONCRA will send you your certificate and a login for the public Ledger.
A 7% administration fee wil be deducted from your purchase for ONCRA. VAT is applicable to your purchase.
4. lf you would like to purchase a larger volume of CRc, are looking for a customised CRc portfolio or just help determining youremissions or footprint, contact us at carbonremoval@bamboologic.eu or +31 24 23 40 606
After deducting the ONCRA administration fee, the revenue is paid to the remover. The funds are used to enable the remover tofinance its carbon removal project, Part of the amount is used for R&D, marketing and management for the benefit of bamboo carbonremoval projects.
ONCRA aims to revolutionise the carbon credits market and lower the entry threshold for removers. The goal should be to remove asmuch CO, from the atmosphere as possible. Many carbon removal proiects are not launched because the investment to get carboncredits into the market is too high compared to the scale. However, there are many ‘smaller’ removal projects that together canabsorb a huge amount of CO, and store carbon. ONCRA is breaking a lance for this remover segment. instead of an up-front cost,ONCRA charges a fee of 7% on each CO, certificate sold. That way, certification and monitoring costs are paid off by the sale of thecertificates.
It is important to have the assurance that your unigue CRC is registered in your name and that each tonne of CO2 removed ismonetised only once. Your purchase and unique certificate number wil be registered in a public registry ( htps:/oncra.org/ledger-login/ ). Each transaction must be registered with ONCRA to be legally valid. In this way, ONCRA guarantees that each tonne of CO2removed can only be claimed by one buyer.

Oncra is the world’s first Open Natural Carbon Removal Framework. it works as a lean and reliable certifier for nature-based carbonremoval prolects, in close cooperation with local governments provinces, the European Commission and a broad network ofinnovative entrepreneurs sequestering carbon with nature-based processes. Supported by ASN Bank, the Province of Gelderlandand South Holland, Oncra was launched during the COp27 UN climate conference in Egypt. Oncra aims to become the simple, openand synergistic framework that will enable many farmers, builders and innovators to account for and monetise the carbon they storeBambooloaic has partnered with ONCRA to establish a methodology and programme for removing carbon from bamboo, enablingbamboo farmers to invest in carbon removal.
ONCRA focuses on science-based and measurement-based carbon removal. Open natural Carbon Removal Accountancy (ONCRA)is a complementary framework that enables the use of existing ‘methods’ developed by Gold Standard, Vera and others. The ONCRAfee structure with no upfront cost to the remover lowers the barrier to entry in the carbon market. in this way, we faciitate the growthof new removal enterprises and strategies in line with what the climate crisis needs.
Yes, ONCRA CO, Certificates account for more than carbon by default. ONCRA accepts only nature-based carbon removal projectsBy conducting a ‘donut check’, we evaluate whether the proiect falls within planetary boundaries and social foundations. Our projectsaldeliver ‘multipotent’ benefits, which we do not call ‘additional, but ‘central., Benefits such as increased biodiversity, clean water.meaningful jobs, are examples of how ONCRA credits tick many SDGs, result in a holistic approach and guarantee their financial andimpact value.
Until now, there is no regulation for CO, Certificates. But the European Wnion is on the right track, working on requlations aroundcarbon removal certificates under the Carbon Removal Certification Framework CRcE), ONCRA carbon removal certificates havebeen set up in the philosophy of these requlations. ONCRA closely folows the developments of these requlations and is in closecontact with the EU through advisory groups.
